We all know that cemented carbide is an alloy material made by powder metallurgy process of hard compounds of refractory metals and bonding metals. An alloy composed of one or more carbides and bonded metal drills is often called a hard alloy. With the advancement of technology and the development of production, many hard alloy workpieces require precision machining, which has relatively high requirements for tolerance dimensions and surface roughness.

Cutting is a type of precision machining for hard alloys. Cutting is one of the commonly used methods for cutting hard alloy rods, plates, and wires. For grooves or cuts below 1mm, ultra-thin diamond cutting blades are commonly used for processing.

Diamond resin based cutting blades, with the outer circular ring serving as the resin bonded abrasive working layer and the central part made of high-strength and high rigidity metal material, are commonly used for cutting grooves and cuts with medium to large cutting depths.

Turning is the most common machining method for precision machining of hard alloys. During the process of turning hard alloy parts, the hardness of the tool itself must be higher than that of the workpiece being machined. Therefore, currently, the tool materials for turning hard alloy parts are mainly made of high hardness and high heat resistance non-metallic adhesives CBN and PCD.

(1) For hard alloy components with a hardness less than HRA90, BNK30 material CBN cutting tools are selected for large margin turning, without tool breakage or burning. Hard alloy components with a hardness greater than HRA90 are generally ground using CDW025 PCD cutting tools or resin bonded diamond grinding wheels.

(2) When precision machining grooves of R3 or higher on hard alloys, for those with large machining allowances, BNK30 material CBN cutting tools are generally used for rough machining first, and then grinding with a grinding wheel. For small machining allowances, grinding can be directly carried out with a grinding wheel, or PCD cutting tools can be used for contour machining.

(3) When machining the crescent groove ribs on hard alloy rolling rolls, CDW025 diamond carving milling cutters (also known as flying cutters or rotary milling cutters) are used.

For the milling process of hard alloy components, CVD diamond coated milling cutters and diamond insert milling cutters can be provided according to customer needs for precision part machining, which can replace electrolytic corrosion and electrical discharge processes, improve production efficiency and product quality.

There are many precision machining methods for hard alloys, such as electrical discharge machining, slow wire cutting, CNC milling, CNC lathe machining, etc
